A recent research trial has shown that by coaching parents of kids with asthma over the phone that their quality of life improves. Since many asthma patients who are prescribed medication at an initial visit with their clinicians do not schedule regular follow-up visits and may not be provided with self-management education, asthma coaching calls to the parents provide a means of follow-up and monitoring of the child with asthma.
“In this intervention, trained coaches offered education and support to parents regarding 4 key asthma management behaviors.”
The trial showed that parents’ quality of life improved with the coaching calls. With some revisions based on the study outcomes, this concept may be a viable option to improve the lives of those with asthma and their families.
