Many people with an allergy to dogs, but want to own a dog, have been adopting
hypoallergenic dogs. Unfortunately, a study being released this month in the American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy finds that there is no less allergen from a “hypoallergenic dog”.
“Based on previous allergy studies conducted here at Henry Ford, exposure to a dog early in life provides protection against dog allergy development. But the idea that you can buy a certain breed of dog and think it will cause less allergy problems for a person already dog-allergic is not borne out by our study.”
Christine Cole Johnson, Ph.D., MPH
Chair of Henry Ford’s Department of Public Health Sciences
Senior author of the study
More surprisingly, allergen levels were slightly higher in a baby’s room in a house with a hypoallergenic dog that was not allowed in the baby’s room as compared to a non-hypoallergenic dog.

From a kid until my late teen years, I’ve been brought up around pets and have lived with dogs, to a parrot and 3 cats. I never thought I had an allergy to any of them, until I moved out on my own and in an apartment that didn’t allow animals. When I would go visit my family, I noticed whenever I was around any of the pets, my skin would start breaking and I had a hard time breathing. Didn’t make sense to me at the time, when I was so used to being around animals and never having those kind of reactions. Then when I saw my allergist, naturally, I found out I was indeed allergic to both dogs, cats, and dander. It’s weird, but I agree with the information above in regards to: Based on previous allergy studies conducted here at Henry Ford, exposure to a dog early in life provides protection against dog allergy development.”
I love being around animals
but now it’s a quick “Hello” and pet, then I go right towards the sink to wash my hands. It would be great to have a Hypoallergenic Dog, but yeah unfortunately there is no such thing.
